As I stand
The crisp grass Stiff beneath my shoes The memories flood back to me Nothing to restrain them anymore Nothing to filter them From the ache And the angst I feel the connection Between the people And the land How the connection Had been broken My parents Have shielded me from all this Yet my connection To the land has been cemented From birth And as the memories flood back I approach them fervently Discovering the past Which prior had Always been shrouded in curiosity Now here I stand On the land of Kashmir But the feeling of contentment I had expected is not present, Filling the void of solitude Where did everyone go?” |

I have never actually been to Kashmir, though I feel like I have experienced it through many a forgotten lore. I wrote this poem to kind of simulate my visit to Kashmir. I guess I am just saying that Kashmir is a very focal point in all of our lives, and the longer we delay rekindling the past, the farther we distance ourselves from our roots. And it just pains me not knowing the true beauty of where I am from. My knowledge upon Kashmir has been delivered to me through stories and description. But still it is not the same. Nothing is more valuable in truly experiencing something than experiencing that thing in its physicality. And so one day I wish to see Kashmir in all of its glory and really experience it. For all of the Kashmiri children like me, who have never seen the motherland, it is of the most essential experiences that we all want and must have.
In order to truly love something, you must know it. Somehow, I feel like I know Kashmir. From the Dal lake, to the beautiful Himalayas that peak just above the view of the eye, Kashmir is my home. |

A timely reminder from a small sensitive child (though born in States yet thinks that his motherland is Kashmir)to elder generation to rekindle the past glory of the land they were born in.He feels the ache and angst of his forceful separation from this charming land.He has simulated his visit to Kashmir as a great seer to stimulate his elders to keep their desire burning for back to homeland.A great job at this tender age!
