Tulsi Gabbard on her way to becoming the first Hindu elected to US Congress |
ulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, 31, is used to making history. At 21, she became the youngest person elected to the Hawaii Legislature. At 23, she was the state's first elected official to voluntarily resign to go to war. At 28, she was the first woman to be presented with an award by the Kuwait Army National Guard. And now She is on her way to becoming the first Hindu elected to US Congress.
Shehjar Editor, Deepak Ganju had an opportunity to meet her and know her first hand. This public servant possesses the humility to respectfully listen to all points of view. She has the necessary experience to handle any challenge, and the courage to make the right decision. As a true Hindu, she has her faith in the universal spiritual teaching of Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga. Hindus all across the globe need to contribute to her campaign and support her, for she is on way to making history by taking oath on the holy Gita for the first time in the United States Congress. Dedication to Service
Tulsi learned from a young age the importance of serving others and living aloha. Inspired and motivated by this spirit of aloha, Tulsi took this lesson to heart, and has tried to live her life dedicated to serving the people of Hawai‘i. From a very young age, Tulsi has shown a passion for public service. Her commitment to serving the community and making a positive impact has influenced every major decision in her life. Tulsi won the August 11th primary and is the Democratic Party’s representative in the Nov. 6 general election. On Aug. 16, she resigned her post as member of the Honolulu City Council to save taxpayers up to $150,000 that would be needed to fund an special mail-in election. Her replacement for Council District 6 will now be chosen in the general election. As a member of the Hawai‘i National Guard, Tulsi Gabbard served two tours of duty in the Middle East. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her service and currently serves as a Captain. A Democrat, Tulsi was the youngest person elected in Hawai‘i history, when in 2002 at the age of 21, she won a Hawai‘i State House seat. Two years later, Tulsi gave up her position in the Legislature to voluntarily join her fellow soldiers being deployed to a war zone in Iraq. Between her two deployments to the Middle East, Tulsi served as an aide to U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka. In 2010 she was elected to the Honolulu City Council where she chaired the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs committee. Serving on The Honolulu City Council
After returning home from her second deployment to the Middle East in 2009, Tulsi offered to serve on the Honolulu City Council and was elected into office on November 3, 2010. Tulsi currently serves as Chair of the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs committee, as Vice Chair of the Budget committee and is a member of the Zoning and Public Works committee. In her capacity as committee chair, Tulsi has taken the lead on many important issues such as medical waste, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), dengue fever, and creating new economic opportunities through Honolulu’s first Sister City Summit. |
CAMPAIGN
Tulsi pulled off a come-from-behind victory over Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann in the Democratic primary for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District. No Republican has held the seat since the district was created in 1971. She is expected to coast to victory in November. She is daughter of a Catholic father and white Hindu mother who moved from American Samoa to Hawaii when she was a child. Tulsi is a rising star in the Democratic Party. She appeared onstage at the Democratic National Convention, alongside House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, for a presentation highlighting Democratic women. |
