 egarded as a proponent of Hindutv, Subramanian Swamy first came into spotlight for protesting against the emergency imposed in 1975. He is one of the founding members of the Janata Party and was elected Member of Parliament 5 times between 1974 and 1999.He became a Professor of Economics at the IIT Delhi in1969 but was removed from the position in early 70s because of his opposition to the Emergency rule of the then Indra Gandhi government. He fought his illegal removal and was legally reinstated in the late 1980s by the Supreme Court of India. He continued in the position till 1991 when he resigned to become a cabinet minister in the Chandra Shekhar government and was in charge of the ministries of Commerce and Law and Justice. He was also a member of the Planning Commission between 1990 and 1991. Swamy has been responsible in convincing the Chinese government to open the pilgrimage route to the sacred Kailash Mansarovar through Tibet. After re-opening of the route, he was the first Indian to visit Kailash and Mansarovar in 1981. He has played an important role in fighting for the cause of preventing the destruction of Rama Sethu bridge. He moved the Supreme Court of India and successfully obtained a stay for the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project on August 31, 2007. The case is under hearing before the Supreme Court. He has been a bitter critic of Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the foreign-born President of the Indian National Congress. Dr. Swamy has been crusading for proper electoral governance in the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in the Indian Elections. Most recently he is in the news for filing a private complaint against 2G spectrum allocation scam in Delhi court alleging that former telecom minister A Raja was involved in the scam and action needs to be taken against the minister under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure conduct probe in the matter.
