Professor Prithvi Nath Dhar |

Professor Prithvi Nath Dhar, popularly known as PN Dhar passed away on July 19th, 2012.
Prof. Dhar was a professor of Economics at the Delhi University, and also served as the Director and Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Economic Growth in New Delhi. In addition, he was one of the founders of the Delhi School of Economics. Dhar, who was 94 at the time of his demise, had also served as the United Nations Assistant Secretary General, Research and Policy Analysis in New York from 1978 to 1985. Born in Srinagar, Kashmir to Pt. Vishnu Hakim and Radha Hakim, he received his early education at Tyndale Biscoe School. He went on to study Economics at Hindu College at the University of Delhi, and later to Harvard. The tradition was broken when he was asked to join the Prime Minister's Office in 1970 as he was neither an IAS nor IFS officer. He served as Principal Secretary to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi andwas consideredone of her closest advisors. In his memoir, ‘Indira Gandhi, the Emergency, and Indian Democracy’, first published in 2000, he provided an insightful documentation of an important period of independent India's political history. In 2008, Prof. Dhar was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award after Bharat Ratna.He is survived by his sister Smt. Malla, brother Sh. B L Dhar, daughter Asha Munshi, and two sons, Abhinav and Madhav, along with their respective families including seven grandchildren, Meena, Manisha, Ishan, Nihal, Ayla, Arjun, and Maya.
