Mother”, the word itself has such a special meaning for me. My mother is one of 7 siblings born in the 1930's in a small village called Gairoo, a couple of miles from Awantipura in Kashmir. She is the eldest daughter, who was given the responsibilities of taking care of family at a very young age and hence she matured very fast. She was and still is very fond of learning and enjoyed her schooling till 8th grade which was quite an accomplishment for a girl in that era. If she could, she would have pursued her studies further, but a girl was not encouraged to go for higher studies, so my mother reluctantly had to put a stop to her further education. That did not stop her from learning. Whenever I meet her I am very interested in hearing about her childhood days and she has a lot of stories to share with me and I am taken back in time and enjoy it. She was very interested in politics. One of her uncles (Pt. Kashyap Bandhu) was an active member in politics and worked closely with Sheikh Abdullah. He was a member of Sanatam Dharam and had many political figures visit him. My mother was close to her uncle and would spent a lot of time listening to his conversations with his political guests. She had that thirst for knowledge and learning. I remember when we were in school she would be interested in reading our books and till recently when she had a chance to meet her grandkids (my children) I could still see that same passion of learning in her. I can only imagine where she would have been professionally if only she was given a chance.... She got married at a very young age of 15, which was very common that time. My father, who was a doctor by profession, was working for J&K Govt and was transferred every few years and my mother had a chance to visit and live in such places like Sopore, Srinagar, Verinaag, Door, Poonch, Rajouri, Doda and Jammu to name a few. Besides her passion for knowledge and learning, she is an intelligent, kind-hearted soul who is very friendly, giving, with positive outlook, has determination to try new things and is adventure seeking. I admire her for all these qualities and for dedicating her life taking care of her family first as a child, then as a wife and mother and then as a grandmother. She continues to do whatever she can to keep all those traits going. My mother is like a solid pillar to me who inspires me everyday. For the past few years my mother has shown interest in writing and that gives her joy. It is my honor and pleasure to share with you a few of my mother's writings. If you like you can send your comments to Shehjar. Enjoy and thank you! I'd like to thank Mr. Arun Koul on behalf of my mother and myself, for fulfilling her deep desire to share her few verses with you all. It would not have been possible without his stepping up and helping me out and giving me the assurance of making it happen...So, thank you Arunji from the bottom of my heart... | |
