BY RAMAN RAINA... Hundreds of displaced Kashmiri Pandits today paid homage to their community members who were killed by terrorists in the valley and strongly protested against the successive governments' apathy towards them. Twenty Kashmiri Pandits tonsured their heads in a symbolic protest against the apathy shown by successive central governments towards their plight since their migration from the valley 20 years back. A special 'Shradh' ceremony was performed in memory of all those Kashmiri Pandits and security force personnel who were killed by terrorists in the valley during the past 20 years. Kashmiri migrants all over the world observe September 14 as 'Martyrs Day' in commemoration of the death anniversary of a Kashmiri Pandit leader Tika Lal Taploo, who, on this day in 1989, was gunned down outside his home in Srinagar by terrorists. Speaking on the occasion, various Kashmiri Pandit leaders lamented the total neglect and apathy towards them by the government and criticised the successive central governments for ''soft pedaling' the issue of terrorism in Kashmir and ignoring the forced exodus of 350,000 Kashmiri Pandits from the valley. The speakers criticised the government's policy of ''appeasing the very people who are determined to puncture the continuity of India as a united and secular nation.'' The Pandits demanded a commission of inquiry to establish the factors behind their exodus, an adequate economic package and employment package, a comprehensive return and rehabilitation policy which takes into account the geopolitical aspirations of the displaced community and an independent socio-economic policy for the remaining Kashmiri Pandits in the valley. A six-member delegation later met National Security Adviser (NSA) M K Narayanan and submitted a memorandum to him. |
