![]() During the last day of school before New Year, while my friends and I are on the bus going home I say “See you next year.” I love to see the bewildered look on their faces. When they finally understand it I am not on the bus. When I get taken unawares with this comment, I feel gullible. On New Years Eve, close to midnight we switch on the TV to watch the ball drop at the Times Square in New York. When I was about three I did not understand why the ball being let down is a symbol of the New Year’s beginning. I still do not understand why, but I do know that it is a tradition and that I love watching so many people watch the ball drop. I also love the countdown from ten to one but it makes me wonder what it must feel like counting backwards for kids who just learnt counting from one to ten. When you reach 1, there is a moment when you are not really sure what is happening. But all of a sudden it hits you; it is the New Year. Happy New Year! And everyone starts screaming and jumping around (me included). One thing about New Year’s Eve I love is that it is the only night of the year that my parents are okay with me staying up past midnight. The problem is that the next day, which is the first day of the New Year, I feel reluctant to wake up. In 2009 I hope that a lot of good things will happen. First of all I want the economy to improve soon because people are hurting and it really can’t get much worse. I hope that president elect Barrack Obama can turn America around. I want the U.S. to put an end to the war in Iraq. I hope that people stop polluting because in a few years Global Warming could get exceptionally dangerous to us and the environment. 2009 is the year in which I will turn 11, when my dad has promised me a cell phone of my liking, so I am looking forward to it. I am also going to Outdoor Ed which is a field trip where the whole grade goes to Connecticut for almost a week. We learn about nature and get to choose the classes we take. We can dissect animals and make small miniature rockets, competing to see which one goes higher. 2009 is also the year when I will graduate to middle school, sometime in September. It is also the year when I am going to be on the A team on my football team. So I really do have a lot to look forward to in 2009. I hope that you too have a lot happening and planned in the New Year. To me 2009 is not only a new year; it is another opportunity for new things to happen. Hey, 2009 is already here - ![]() |
