In my 10 year lifetime, I have asked about 100 adults if they have read any of the 7 Harry Potter books. Out of these 100 less than ? have read even 1 of the Harry Potter books. Not surprisingly I asked children the same question and more than ? of the children said they had read at least 1 of the Harry Potter books. Do you know what that means? It means that unless I am interpreting wrongly, we children have been reading more of Harry Potter than our parents have. If you’re wondering how come children read more Harry Potter than adults, I’ll tell you my explanation for this. Adults think that the Harry Potter books are for children only. If you are also an adult who thinks so, I have a message for you, “YOU ARE WRONG”. If that bold message did not, here are some facts that might help you to think differently. The Harry Potter books have won countless awards over the past few years for being favorites not only with children but also with the adults who have read these. Harry Potter movies are viewed and enjoyed by children and adults alike. If the adults did not have to accompany their children for these movies, they might as well have missed out on these treats for themselves. Importantly, Harry Potter books have been on best seller lists ever since they were written and it makes sense to check these out. Now I will give you a small background of Harry Potter followed by a short summary of what each book is about. Harry Potter (also known as the boy who lived and soon you will know why) was born in the age when Lord Voldemort (called You-Know-Who and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named by those too afraid to say his name) ruled the wizarding world. Voldemort was a very evil dark wizard. One day Voldemort tried to kill new born Harry and his parents. He succeeded in killing Harry’s parents but when he shot his killing curse at Harry it just bounced of his head and hit Voldemort. Most people thought that Voldemort was gone forever but a few wizards thought that Voldemort was still alive.  In the first book Harry
starts out living with normal people instead of wizards. He is living
with the Dursleys who treat him very badly. Soon Harry finds out he is
a wizard and he travels to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
There he meets new friends and makes new enemies. Harry and his friends
find out that Voldemort’s spirit is making an attempt to come back to
life. To find out what happens next, read “Harry Potter and The
Sorcerers Stone”. In the second book Harry
goes back to the Dursleys for Summer Vacation. When he comes back to
Hogwarts, mysterious attacks have been sited and Harry is the number
one suspect. To find out what happens next read “Harry Potter and The
Chamber of Secrets”. In the third
Harry Potter book a dangerous criminal has escaped from the feared
wizard prison, Azkaban. His name is Sirius Black. Sirius is trying to
get into Hogwarts. Who is Sirius Black really and why is he trying to
break into Hogwarts? To find out, read Harry Potter and the “Prisoner
of Azkaban”.  In the fourth
Harry Potter book the Triwizard Tournament is held at Hogwarts. The
Triwizard Tournament is when three champions, one from each school,
compete together. But this time there are four champions. There are two
from Hogwarts, Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory. Harry has bigger
problems now that Voldemort has his own body. To find out what happens
in the tournament read “Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire”. In the fifth book
Harry and his friends make a club called Dumbledores Army. There is
also a new teacher at Hogwarts. Her name is Professor Umbridge and if
you by any chance get a detention with her, she will make you write
with a pen without ink on you arm until she thinks the cut is deep
enough. Can Harry and his friends sack Umbridge? To find out read
“Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix”.  In the sixth book panic has stricken. Everyone knows now that Voldemort has come back to life. Now it is up to Harry to save Hogwarts from Voldemort’s clutches. Can he do it? Read “Harry Potter and Half-Blood-Prince” to find out.
I’m terribly sorry but I cannot tell you about the seventh book. That
is for you to read and find out by yourself, but I can tell you this.
“Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows” is the perfect closer for the
Harry Potter series. At the end of this book there is chapter called
“Nineteen years later”, which shows what happens to Harry and his
friends in nineteen years.So in conclusion, I think that you should read one of the Harry Potter series books to start and if you read one or the other, you would want to read more. If you still don’t think the Harry Potter books are for you then you might be interested in Angie Sage’s Septimus Heap series. In this book there is a boy named Septimus. At first he didn’t know this was his name as he had been known as Boy 412 at his old army. But he finds out he is part of a Magykal (notice I have spelt magic wrongly but only because that is how they spell it in the book and that is what makes it a lot of fun) family and that he is the 7th son of Silias Heap. Septimus also becomes an apprentice of an Extra Ordinary Wizard. If you are wondering what else might be going on, please read the book and you will find out. |
