Dr. Anil Kaul & Robin Raina honored with South Asian Excellence Awards |

Anil K. Kaul, M.D., D.D.S., M.P.H., visiting associate professor of microbiology at Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences, recently received the Science Achiever of the Year award at the South Asian Excellence Awards ceremony in New York City. This is the first time the excellence awards, conceived by Sony Entertainment Television to recognize the success of South Asians in multiple fields of expertise throughout the United States, have been given. The ceremony, hosted by Sony Entertainment Television Asia, was broadcast live in more than 100 countries. Dr. Kaul’s research focuses on infectious diseases with special interest in women’s health related issues including premature births. He holds several patents including one for early detection of premature births. His current research involves developing new diagnostic tools for early detection of cancer, and osteoporosis, as well as wireless monitoring of pregnancy. "I believe that this award will increase awareness about women’s healthcare issues, particularly those related to pre-term birth and low-birth weight. Innovative research in this area is being done right here in Tulsa,” Dr. Kaul said. “I am also hopeful that this will motivate students to enter the exciting field of biomedical research so that the fight against human diseases is continued globally because health, after all, is global." Dr. Kaul received a medical degree from Madras Medical College of Madras University, a dental degree from King Georges’ Medical College, both in India, and a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas in Galveston and was associate professor in the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at OU College of Medicine. He also was an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. Dr. Kaul joined OSU in 2007. He is director of the Asia-Pacific region for the International Infectious Diseases Society for Obstetricians & Gynecologists. He has served on the board of the India Association of Greater Tulsa and is immediate past president of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Oklahoma. He has been a member of the advisory committee of NIH sponsored General Clinical Research Center and a scientific reviewer for the NIH Study section and professional journals including the American Journal for Obstetrics & Gynecology. Robin Raina, won the South Asian Personality of the Year award while Dr Anil Kaul won the award for his contributions in the field of science. South Asian Excellence Awards (SAEA) is first-of-its-kind award created to recognize and honor South Asian achievers for a wide swath of accomplishments, in the fields of business, entertainment, social and public service, science, sports, literature, technology and IT, and the performing and visual arts, with a special award given to two young achievers demonstrating outstanding excellence in their field. |
