Book Review by Avtar Bhat

Roop Kaa Roog is an anthology of short stories by Avtar Krishan Razdhan. These stories are based on the day to day events and other problems facing the society today. Roop Kaa Roog is not the first book of this prolific writer who has earned a name and fame among the short story writers. Prior to it, his books in Hindi include Sogatt, Aatank-Beej, LBW (Kashmir) and Aarsh Say Farsh Taak. Despite being handicapped, Razdhan did not allow his disability to hamper his ventures he undertook upto now, but laid an example for others to follow. He not only carved a niche for himself in the field of writing but also became an inspiration for those who depend on others for help. Like all other members of his community Razdhan is also facing the pangs of exiled life for over 19 years. Despite such a lapse of time, he still has a treasure of the memories of Valley’s charming beauty, its meadows, springs, dense forests and snowcapped mountains. These memories have cheeped in his various short stories which indicates that he wants to relieve them in his readers. He has made a reference to this in the foreword of his book Roop Kaa Roog in which he has said that with the migration of the members of his community from Kashmir over 5000 year old civilization and culture in Valley is vanishing slowly. He has also warned that if it continued, the Kashmiri Pandits will lose their identity in the near future. Some of Razdhan’s short stories have been published in various newspapers and magazines in India and abroad and his writings have been highly acclaimed by his readers. By going through his book Roop Kaa Roog one comes to know that Mr Razdhan wants to transform the society and exhorts the people to fight against the social evils, crimes against humanity and develop a spirit of sacrifice. His stories also revolve round the life of a common man and the day to day problems he faces. While going through his stories like Daas Lakh Rupay, Safar,Gandhi, Barsaat, Prem and Vasna etc one comes to know that writer is deeply perturbed by the social evils and prevailing customs. In his story Daas Lakh Rupay Razdhan highlights the plight of a Kashmiri Pandit employee belonging to middle class family who after collecting his all pensioneary benefits amounting to Rs 10lakh constructs a palatial house on the outskirts of Srinagar but within some months after shifting to his new residence he had to migrate from the Valley along with his other community members and take refuge in a tent at Jammu. One day he comes to know through a news paper headline that his house in Kashmir Valley has been razed to ground. This shocks both the author and his wife who had never dreamt of it. The stories are well knit, and keep readers glued to the book upto the last. The book, being an earnest effort is surely going to enrich the vast treasure of Hindi literature.
